We wanted to split!
Starflash, November 2003

The view from the Penthouse Suite of the Conrad Hotel in London is breathtaking: The tourist attractions and the wonderful glittering Themse. But inside the Starflash Photostudio there is a hectic Chaos. The Westlife Boys are hanging on their mobile phones, talking loudly and fast. Bryan is laughing about an english reporter, who wants to know if he does sport because of his weight. Mark is talking with manager Louis Walsh about the business. Kian makes plans for the next journey. Mark orders a few albums of their just finished new Album 'Turn Around', which will be out on november 24th. Before the Interview starts, the Album is already played and the Song 'Turn Around' drowns out everything. It's a sensational, really untypical song for Westlife...

Hey, that does not sound like Westlife!
Nicky: The last song was mixed and finished yesterday. But one thing is clear: It will be the best album we did so far. Every of the 12 Songs is great. one of the few ballads on the CD is called 'On my shoulder', and there are also Dance-Songs in a madonna-style.

Did you cook up Westlife?
Shane: As we had been in Germany with the last Tour, we had a meeting. What we did so far was boring now for us - and for the Fans. There was just a leck of fun. Something dramatic had to happen, a kind of shock tactic: An Album with songs only chosen by us. We made the decision together and the Record Company only got the finished version of the Album: We will be responsible for everything that happens now.
Mark: We just did not want to go on with this boring, old Westlife Style.
Kian: We were close to a split. It has almost been over with Westlife. But instead, we went shopping - shopping for the best songs for our album. We did not wrote any of the Songs by ourselves, we just bought the best.

Are there any fights in the group?
Nicky: No, we come along very well and we would never split our of personal reasons. We have success, travelled very much, and earned a lot of money with this.
Bryan: It's like a good relationship with a girl. You fight sometimes, but reconsile, have fun and insight. But we are made for each other as friends and for work. There was just a new 'kick' that was missing.

Aren't you afraid, that you will lose old Fans?
Shane: Westlife are the Band that breaky any rules from now on - this album is only the beginning. We do not have a clue what impression it will have on the Fans. We do only know, that it represents us as band. That's why we are really curious.
Nicky: When we are on Tour next year, it will be proof for us.

Will you also play in Germany?
Mark: Sure, the german Fans have always been really faithful and loyal. We are really looking forward to the Germany gigs in the next summer!

Does the Video for 'hey Whatever' shows already the 'New Westlife'?
Kian (smiles): We feel miserable after a night out. Where we are is chaos - and the women...
Bryan: ... A typical scene for Westlife. We don't need any practising in acting, only our own experiences. (all laughing) I am still asked about the story with the lap-Dancer, which is almost 2 years ago now. And the thing is, the story is not true like all the newspaper write it. But my wife Kerry and me made this story even stronger. WIth our two daughters Molly and Lilly Sue, we are really happy.

In England you are often in the Newspapers. You even sold your wedding photos...
Nicky: Bryan and me are often in the Newspapers. But the relationship to our wifes cannot be destroyed by them. We didn't want paparazzi-Photos on our wedding, so we decided to sell them to one newspaper.
Shane: But not for me. I will not do any deals with newspapers, when I will marry Gillian. It will be a private celebration for our family and friends. I cannot wait till December 28th, when we will marry in Ashford Castle in front of 400 guests. Till then the house I am building in SLigo will be ready, so we can move in when we are in honeymoon.

For Mark, marriage is far away. You do not have a releationship at the moment...
Mark: I wish I have a relationship, and I really yearn for a relationship. But so far, I just did not have much luck in Love. I am really poor - all the newspaper write about every girl you can imagine, that was supposed to have a date with me, or have been seeing together with me. Those girls come to me, because they know I am in a band. At the beginning, this was great and really exciting. But now I hate it. Nicky and Shane knew their Girlfriends even before Westlife and Bryan and Kerry are made for each other.
Bryan: Mark is really shy, and it is difficult for him to find the right girl. The press thinks, we are famous, have money, so it is not important what they write about us. But we are just normal Humans - and fictions hurt.

Do you still believe in big love?
Mark: Absolutely. Money alone does not make happy. I am young, so I can wait till I find it someday.

What was with this relationship between Liz and you, Kian?
Kian: After splitting up with my former girlfriend I was happy to be single. The relationship with Liz was a big mistake. Now I have a lovely new girlfriend: The actrice Jodi Albert. We meet each other the first time 5 years ago, when she was in the girl band 'girl Thing'. But since 3 month we are a couple. but there are no plans to marry yet.

Where can you relax from the showbiz?
Shane: Our familys are our resting place. Our roots are in Ireland - and since we travel a lot they are even more important to us. I will live in Ireland forever - but maybe buy a second flat in London.
Nicky: Georgina and I recently bought a house in Dublin - it's a huge family house. We want to buy Holiday Homes in South Africa and London, but we will never move into another Country.
Bryan: For me and Kerry there is only the house in Dublin. When we are on the road, we simply book hotels.
Kian: Mark and I bought flats in London-Fulham. We work there very often. But we also have our homes in Ireland, where we will live when Westlife may be over some day. Ireland is my Home.

What about the future of Westlife?
Shane: We are arise now, married or will marry soon, but one thing will never chance: The love and pation for Music and Westlife. That's why we will give anything as long as we can.
Mark: Yeah, Westlife are not over. Also we were very close to a splitting...
Bryan: If everything is just routine, you should hang up your carriere. But this point is by far not reached by us.
