The Irish language is one of the three Gaelic languages together with Scots, Gaelic and Manx. The language has been spoken in Ireland for at least two thousand years and records of its literature stretch back to about the year 800. Irish remained the majority language in the country until the middle of the nineteenth century when the famine saw over one million people dying and another million being forced to leave their homeland. The decline of the language was speeded up by the English authorities' official policy against the language, church discouragement and the crushing of the national psyche following the disaster of the famine.
The revival of the language began in earnest at the end of the nineteenth century and, while not always successful, has pointed the way for the language to be brought back into more popular usage throughout the country. Today there is an Irish language Television Station with Irish programmes on others and two radio stations broadcasting in the language, two weekly newspapers, numerous magazines and a vibrant publishing industry with many novels, books of poetry and general works being published.
One feature of the modern Irish revival is that the Irish speaking community has become an international community with many Irish speakers throughout the world. There are also large numbers of Irish language websites on the internet.

1. Wenn ihr euch mal wieder fragt, wie herum der Akzent da oben drauf kommt, dann macht es im Zweifelsfall einfach so * ´ * herum. Ich hab im Dictonary nämlich kaum ein Wort gesehen, bei dem es anders herum war :))
2. Wenn ihr Irisch richtig lernen wollt, solltet ihr euch unbedingt eine Sprachkassette kaufen, da man ja bekanntlicherweise nie weiss, wie man das alles jetzt wirklich ausspricht...
3. Versucht am besten nie bei einem Iren mit euren Sprachkenntnissen anzugeben, ansonsten könnte es sein, dass euer Gesprächspartner sich vor Lachen auf dem Boden kringelt!!
